Special Pharmaceutical Benefits Program (SPBP) in Pennsylvania

Special Pharmaceutical Benefits Program (SPBP)
SPBP is a program that helps individuals and families pay for prescription drugs to treat HIV/AIDS or schizophrenia. You must meet income requirements to be eligible. (In other states, this program is called the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP).

Who is eligible for SPBP?
In order to be eligible for the SPBP program, you must meet the following requirements:
• Be a resident of Pennsylvania. (You cannot be in jail or prison);
• Provide proof of your gross annual income (before taxes are taken out);
• Provide a copy of your Social Security card;
• Provide proof of medical need for SPBP covered drugs.

If you are eligible for prescription drug coverage through Medical Assistance (or through a Medical Assistance managed care provider), you are NOT eligible for SPBP.

How do you apply for this program?
You need to complete an SPBP application form.

• Get an SPBP application from your local County Assistance Office, community based AIDS service organization, hemophilia center, some doctors' offices and pharmacies, and local mental health providers.
• You can download the application. (You need Adobe Acrobat to open this file. If you don’t have Adobe Acrobat, click here for a free download.)
• You can also call or write to the SPBP office for an application:
